The Wheatland Warriors took a break from the SCAHL Playoffs to partake in the Provincial Championship tournament March 15-17 in Medicine Hat.
The local double-A bantam team, which will face the Okotoks Oilers in the league finals, finished the tournament with a 0-3-1 record.
Despite not earning a win, the Warriors kept all the games to within two goals and enjoyed the experience of playing in the Provincial Championship.
However, the goal for the entire year has been the SCAHL Championship, which opened in Okotoks March 21 for Game 1 (result not available as of press time).
“A league (championship) is our No. 1 goal, for sure,” said Warriors head coach Paden Grant prior to the provincial tournament. “If you can win in provincials or do good there, then that’s an added bonus, but the league is the No. 1 goal, something we’ve been going for the entire year.”
The Warriors opened the tournament on March 15 with a 1-1 draw versus the NWCAA Bruins, before losing a close 4-3 battle with the Wainwright Polar Kings.
The Warriors then fell 3-1 to the St. Albert Bears the following day, before falling 6-4 to the Leduc Roughnecks later that evening.
Now the Warriors are focused on the SCAHL Championship.
Game 2 of the best-of-five series is March 23 in Okotoks, before the series shifts home for Game 3 on March 24 (4 p.m.) at the Strathmore Family Centre. Game 4, if necessary, will also be in Strathmore on March 25 (6:30 p.m.), while Game 5, if necessary will be in Okotoks the following day.
