On July 12, the Strathmore Venom pulled through a 15-11 victory over the Lacoka Locos, finishing off their season second in the division. On July 17, the Venom had their opening playoff game against Innisfail, for which results were not available at the time of print.
The Venom were 3-1 against Innisfail this season, only losing to them in the first game of the year.
“We have some key players coming off injuries,” said Coach Hal Morris. “As far as strategies, we’ll probably maintain the same position we had throughout the year. We’ve had good luck against Innisfail. We’ve always played pretty hard against those guys.”
Morris mentioned a few standout players on the team, including league-leading scorer Cody Betterton. He also noted his son, Brady Morris, who finished fourth in league scoring in just his first year of junior lacrosse. Both players had nine points each against the Locos last Friday.
“The team as a whole played absolutely excellent,” said Hal Morris of the Lacoka game. “We kind of fell asleep in the second period, but finally woke up in the third.”
The team, made up of 16 to 21-year-olds, has impressed their coach with their amount of discipline, especially in their own end.
“Defensive play has been very good the last few games. We’ve changed our system up a little bit, we’ve simplified it which makes it tougher for other teams,” he said.
Should the Venom win on July 17 against Innisfail, they will have their next game on July 19 in Red Deer.
