Strathmore High School held their end of the year Awards Night on June 10, with a few students taking home more recognitions than they could carry.
Valedictorian Rynnelle Wiebe had the highest average of all Grade 12 students and also gathered the class awards for Advanced Placement Biology, Biology 30, and Chemistry 30. Along with being a talented scientist, she’s also a gifted musician, earning the awards for Instrumental Jazz 35, and Instrumental Music 30. Her valedictorian address is expected to be well worded, as she was presented with the English 30-1 title as well.
Following in Wiebe’s well-rounded footsteps is Top Grade 11 student, Mariah Wilson. Wilson had the top marks in Biology 20, Chemistry 20, Physics 20, Food Studies 2C, and Instrumental Music 20. With a positive attitude and a willingness to volunteer at her school and in the community, she was also awarded the Gordon Prusky Citizenship Award for Grade 11.
Top Grade 10 student Liam Schoepp also was granted with English 10-1, Game Programming 1A and Survivor: Male Edition honours.
The Student of the Year award goes to a Spartan that maintains a high academic standard while being involved with co-cirriculars. They volunteer and have a positive attitude, while exuding respect, integrity, discipline and effort. This $5,000 scholarship from Bruce Farms went to Jonah Zankl, who also had the best marks in Advanced Placement Calculus and Social Studies 30-1.
The Western Financial Group Bursary went to Paige Rist for exceptional achievement; Rist is a Psych Major who will be attending the University of Calgary Arts and Science Honours Academy in September.
Jenna Gigantelli was given the Strathmore Times Class Act merit, as someone with a quality of character that sets them apart from their peers. The award is handed over to a Grade 12 student who holds an average higher than 70 per cent, and has extraordinary accomplishments in an area outside of academics.
Cory Campbell and Kaitlyn Dougan were named Male and Female Athletes of the Year respectively, each receiving a ring for their efforts. Campbell was also the Senior Boys Basketball MVP, while Dougan gained similar honours as the Senior Girls Soccer MVP.
A helicopter ride was donated to Haley Pettigrew and Dale Godden, this year’s recipients of the Steve Grajczyk Award, a title earned by proven success against adversity with a high potential for the future.
