At the end of the school year last year Strathmore High School staff and students made a lip dub video that highlights their school in every aspect. Every student and teacher worked hard at promoting the school to the current tune by Carly Rae Jepsom – Good Time. You can view the video if you go to www.strathmorehighschool.com
The biggest news for Strathmore High School (SHS) this coming 2013-2014 school season is the addition of the Bison Hockey training program. Coach, mentor and teacher Dan MacDonald is excited that rookie try-outs began this week. Students will have one block of hockey and the rest core and option classes
With the addition of some new programming and options the school numbers are up this year again.
Kyle Larson and Douglas Raycroft, associate principals of SHS say they are excited about both the academic programming and extracurricular athletics being offered again this year with some new faces on the front.
With volleyball starting immediately, ex Husky Cole Hinz from the University of Saskatchewan takes on the boys’ volleyball teams. Along with Brandie Dundas, Randy Moncks continues on with Senior High girls. Carrie Westgard, alumni from the Dinos in Calgary, and Leah Malinowski will be coaching the JV girls.
Golf is starting off with a real “drive” as the SHS team is the defending provincial champion at the moment and will be hosting the golf provincials on Sept. 23-24.
Next season’s basketball courts see a new face from Red Deer College; Coach Ken Smith joins the athletic teaching team at SHS.
Hinz, Smith and Malinowski are all new teachers for SHS this year.
With the retirement of long time teacher/librarian Kathy Tucker, the new librarian is Angela Treacy. Tim Drover is the new cafeteria manager and with his phenomenal experience students will be able to receive credits with foods and also have the ability to do apprenticeship programming with him.
SHS is also offering all AP and Honors courses for their core classes. AP programming allows academic students to get University level programming available to them. The welcome back lunch BBQ will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 12 for all students and staff.
