After a set of mail keys were stolen on March 14, Canada Post took immediate action to ensure the mail and mailboxes affected would be safe.
Last Thursday an unidentified female stole a set of Canada Post mail keys before fleeing in a newer model Dodge pickup with red lettering on the tailgate.
The set of keys stolen could be used to open up the panels but could not the individual mailboxes.
“Because they could open more than one we decided to change the locks on every single one of them,” said Anick Losier, a spokesperson for Canada Post.
“We take people’s mail safety very seriously, not only have we changed the locks but we’ve moved everybody’s (mail) into the general delivery at the Post Office until this situation is resolved.”
Canada Post began changing out all locks in the affected areas – Strathmore, Langdon and Dalemead – on March 18. Due to the weather conditions it took a couple of days to replace all of the locks.
This is not the first time that a set of keys has been stolen from Canada Post and there are specific procedures in place for if and when a situation does occur.
“I would like to say no, but unfortunately it has (happened). Fortunately for us they are few and far between and that’s why for us it is so important that the minute that these incidences occur, anybody that suspects something been happening with their mail (need) to either call us or call local authorities so we can launch immediately an investigation,” said Losier.
“Our people don’t take chances because identity theft, fraud, is so prevalent right nowadays in our lives and mail is just important and documents need to be secure … it’s part of our process we move immediately.”
The person who took the keys has not yet been apprehended. Canada Post is collaborating with the RCMP on the investigation. If anyone has any details or information they should contact the local RCMP at 403-934-3968.
