In their first game of the season, the Strathmore Spartans bantam team shut out the Innisfail Cyclones 40-0, at home on Aug. 31. Coach Doug Klauck was pleased with the outcome – and especially with the play of 14-year-old Isaac Wegnar; the wide receiver had three touchdowns for Strathmore.
“He kicked a couple field goals too, so he had a good day,” Klauck said of Wegnar, who played bantam last year as well.
With such a high turnover of players, Klauck was impressed with his team’s ability to merge together, and handle the pressure of the opening game.
“It varies year to year,” he said. “For being the first game of the year, we were fairly disciplined. They really played with a lot of character that we didn’t see through practice, but it showed up in the game this week.”
Some of Klauck’s players are completely new to the sport, so understanding the groundwork is key for their next game against Drumheller on Sept. 14.
“We keep drilling in the fundamentals to the boys. That’s about all we can do at this time; we’re still getting the basics down for some of them,” said Klauck.
The Spartans have a bye this week, though Strathmore High travels to Drumheller on Sept. 6, while the peewee Spartans face Innisfail the next day.
