Each year with students graduating, the loss of skills and experience leave teams to look towards the younger students to step up and fill shoes. Strathmore High and Holy Cross Collegiate should have no problem doing so, as both their Jr. Girls and Jr. Boys teams displayed great results at the County’s Track and Field Meet on May 22.
Strathmore High’s Kyle Foster came first in the 100m dash, the 400m dash, and the 3000m dash, followed closely by teammate Grady White who finished second in the 100m, but first in the 200m. 15-year-old White also took first in long jump.
Josh Hauck of Holy Cross finished first in triple jump, and took second in both long jump and high jump. Christopher O’Leary, a fellow Hawk, had the best results in shot put and discus.
On the girls’ side, Karly Larson of SHS finished first in high jump, the 400m, and the 800m. From Holy Cross, Alicia Magwood took first in triple jump and long jump.
Both schools hold great depth for upcoming years. But as for 2013, look for 18-year-old Will Kemp of Strathmore High to stand out at Zones; he finished first in the 800m, 1500m and the 3000m. Similarly, SHS Sr. Jessica Murphy came first in three events as well: 100m, hurdles, and high jump.
Zones will take place at Foothills Park on May 28, followed by Provincials (also at Foothills) June 7-8.
