After June’s floods swept into Calgary, the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium suddenly cancelled Expressions Dance Studio’s annual recital. On Oct. 5, 100 students finally get their chance to perform.
“They were so incredibly disappointed. The Jubilee cancelled such last minute – didn’t give us any warning or heads up,” said Heather Thomas, owner and director of the studio. “But they’re thrilled that they get to be at the Jubilee. It’s a huge venue, and it’s so gorgeous. It’s such a fabulous experience.”
Over 50 programs are available at the studio – tap, ballet, lyrical, acrobatics, musical theatre, modern. Adult combo classes and team street jazz classes are also offered, with registration still ongoing. Into its 31st year, the dancers will be able to perform two shows this session, as this season’s recital is coming up as well.
“We’ve been doing rehearsals, and back into doing last year’s routines,” Thomas said. They have all these beautiful costumes that they get to wear that they didn’t have a chance to use. They’re super excited.”
It’s been a very stressful ordeal, having to delay the show for three months, and still wanting to give the kids a positive feeling from the outcome of June’s disaster; some students have moved or have other commitments.
“You know, that’s their decision that they have made,” Thomas said. “But generally, everyone’s been very positive and gung-ho about doing it.”
