For the second time in three years the Roadhouse has won the best burger. The first time, in 2011, was for their smokehouse burger. This year it was the old fashioned burger that took the title.
“Sometimes people don’t like extras on their burger like BBQ sauce and that was what the smokehouse burger had so we just wanted a regular burger, it’s got cheese on it, bacon on it, so its a pretty basic burger,” said Belinda Derraugh, general manager for the Roadhouse.
The old fashioned burger also comes with lettuce, tomato and onion. Derraugh said she wasn’t really surprised that they won again. She thinks they have good burgers and said the key is that a butcher in Calgary makes the burgers to the restaurant’s specifications.
“It’s the burger. It’s not what’s on it, or in it, it’s the actual burger,” said Derraugh.
Next year Derraugh said she hopes more people enter the best burger contest. She said everyone likes to win and she thinks its good for the town when there are friendly competitions.
“I just think if there was a whole pile of more people doing it, it’s more fun,” said Derraugh.
“I think it is good for business, it’s just one added thing more. Any plaques or anything we can win is better than none.”
One of the biggest things she likes about the contest is that it’s a way to show the kitchen staff that people like what they’re cooking back there. It’s good for their morale.
Derraugh’s favourite burger is the chuckwagon burger, but she said they aren’t sure yet which one they will be entering into next year’s contest.
