Members of the Cairnhill Community Association (CCA) gathered at the Cairnhill schoolhouse for a general meeting on March 13 to discuss scheduling events and plan for further use of their facility.
After recently receiving funds from a casino fundraiser held in December of 2012, which raised over $70,000, and an application put in for the Community Facility Enhancement Grant awarded by Wheatland County, there was much talk over further improvements to the existing community building.
The Community Enhancement Grant is designed to provide financial support towards the use of recreational, cultural and community facilities. Money received from the grant in 2012 – just over $7,000 was awarded – paid for improvements to the roof of the Cairnhill schoolhouse.
“It should last the next 50 years, so most of you won’t be around when it leaks again,” said Keith Clayton, vice president of CCA.
Other possible improvements that were discussed were: upgrades to the existing kitchen, including the purchasing of newer appliances; the building of indoor washrooms rather than continue the use of the existing outdoor portable toilets; repairs to the exterior of the building; and the placing of signage on the property.
A Building committee meeting has been set for April 17, at 7 p.m. to brainstorm ideas for future renovations.
The meeting will be held at the Cairnhill schoolhouse and all members are encouraged to attend.
The Cairnhill school district formed in 1913. It is located about 10 minutes south of Strathmore on Highway 817. Grades 1-9 were taught there and the school operated until 1946.
A few local families purchased the property after that and the structure continues to stand proudly on the hill serving as a community centre.
“We wish for the continuation of the Cairnhill Community for the up and coming generation. We want the young kids to enjoy this facility in a similar fashion as we did,” said Clint Sims, president of CCA.
