Kevin Mertz, a grade eight math and health teacher at Crowther Memorial Junior High, is excited to have advanced to the World Triathlon Championships that will be held in London England from September 11-15 2013.
Mertz qualified for a spot by winning the sprint distance Alberta Provincial Championships in Banff last September. Mertz will be representing Canada in the sprint distance, which is 750km swim, 20km bike and 5km run.
“I am very excited for the opportunity to race at the international level and representing my country,” said Mertz.
With a family of five he finds himself constantly trying to balance family life with his intensive training schedule of two 1.5 hour sessions twice a day, six days a week. On Thursday, March 7 local band Pulse, in partnership with the Strathmore Station, hosted a fundraiser to help offset the costly travel expenses of this once in a life time experience. With a donation of $1,200 from the Station and a grand total through the fund raiser of $4,300, Kevin Mertz is grateful to have better than half his trip paid for by the generosity of friends, family and supporters. Pulse, which consists of Paul Sonsteby, Mike Smith, Mike Field and Todd Tibeau, entertained the crowd and supported their buddy in his dream.
