A consolidated school for kindergarten to Grade 12 students in East Wheatland moved one step closer to becoming a reality when Wheatland County council approved the second reading for the re-designation of 12 acres south east of the intersection of highways 561 and 840 (NW 11-24-22-W4M) at a public hearing in Standard on Aug. 29.
Approximately 200 people filled the hall to speak for and against the application, and after two and a half hours of presentations for and against the proposal, County Council voted, with Division 3 Councillor Don VanderVelde casting the lone vote opposed to re-designating the parcel of land from Agricultural General to Community Service District.
Golden Hills School Division is applying for the re-designation of the land, which is owned by Klaiber Land and Cattle Co. Ltd.
Prior to the third reading of the application, the County Council will have opportunity to consider in greater detail various aspects of the project such as transportation and environmental issues.
