The Wheatland Chiefs got caught in a massive spring storm on their way to the provincial championship tournament, spending nearly 17 hours on a bus somewhere along the QE2.
However, when the local double-A midget team made it to Whitecourt for the 10-team tournament, they created a storm of their own.
The Chiefs finished first in their pool with an impressive 3-0-1 record and earned a berth in the provincial championship semi-finals.
After missing their scheduled game on March 21, the Chiefs opened the tournament with a 3-1 victory over the host Whitecourt Wolverines the following morning, before earning another 3-1 win over the Fort Saskatchewan later that afternoon.
The Chiefs would then face league rival Red Deer on March 23, posting a 4-4 draw, before closing out the round robin portion of the tournament with a 3-1 win over the SSAC Lakewood Chev Olds.
By going undefeated during the round robin the Chiefs earned a berth in the semi-final on March 24. Despite a valiant effort, the Chiefs fell 4-2 to the Sherwood Park Oilers.
Despite some ups and downs this past season, the Chiefs had a successful campaign, which will be celebrated during the Wheatland Athletic Association awards night later next month.
Braves end successful campaign
After capturing the SCAHL Championship earlier this month, the Wheatland Braves took part in the provincial championship tournament March 21-24 in Springbank.
Along with achieving their ultimate goal of winning the league, the Braves took part in the 10-team peewee tournament.
Wheatland opened the tournament with a 6-2 win over Grande Prairie on March 21, before falling 5-3 to the Springbank Whalers the following day.
The Braves closed out the tournament with a 3-3 draw versus Lloydminster and a 5-2 loss to the NWZ Renegades.
