A six-game winning streak has propelled the Wheatland Chiefs to within two points of second place in the South Division of the SCAHL.
The local double-A midget team, which currently sits in sixth place in the standings in a very tight division, defeated the Foothills Bisons 4-1 on Jan. 13 at the Strathmore Family Centre.
Brandon Russell and Wyatt Rabbit Carrier each registered a goal and an assist, while Coltyn Herman and Dalton Dubetz each scored for the Chiefs, who built a 4-0 lead en route to the win.
Tyler Sharuga added a pair of assists in the win, while Kristian Ayoungman and Brayden Biccum each registered an assist.
The Chiefs were originally scheduled to face the Red Deer Pro-Stitch on Jan. 12, but the game was cancelled because of Strathmore’s local state of emergency when the main pipeline into town ruptured.
The Chiefs will look to extend their winning streak to seven games when they host the Innisfail Flyers on Jan. 18 (7:30 p.m.) at the Strathmore Family Centre.

Braves back on track
The Wheatland Braves have responded with a pair of victories after losing their second game of the season.
The local double-A peewee team hammered the Taber Golden Suns 8-1 on Jan. 11 in Hussar, before destroying Airdrie 14-3 the following day on the road.
According to Braves head coach Keith Klemmensen, he was pleased with the way his team responded against Taber after losing the weekend before.
“(That was) as complete of game by all the guys as we’ve had this year,” said Klemmensen in a text message to the Times. “(We) outshot them 55-8, hit at least eight crossbars. The score could have been more lopsided, but the important thing was the 60 (minute) effort.”
The Braves followed that game with a dominant game over Airdrie, despite a “minor lull late in the first period.”
According to Klemmensen, even though the level of competition was not as high as the weekend before, the Braves elevated their level play, “which indicates some intellectual maturity starting to take hold.”
The Braves will now take part in an exhibition tournament before resuming league play on Feb. 2.

Warriors win
The Wheatland Warriors improved to 15-6-4 on the season after an 8-2 road win over the Foothills Bisons on Jan. 12.
The local double-A bantam team built a 7-0 lead en route to the win.
Kody Hammond scored three goals, while Regan Kinley added two goals and an assist to lead the way for the Warriors. Alec Biletsky added a goal and two assists, while Matt Quigley added a goal and an assist.
The Warriors will now host the Airdrie Lightning on Jan. 18 (7:30 p.m.) in Hussar.
