A journey through space

The Standard Arena was packed on Friday evening with parents, grandparents and visitors who came out to watch their kids perform in the annual ice carnival.
This year’s Carnival theme was all about space and planets. The evening began with O’ Canada sung by Maren Everett as Kennedy Adamson and Nicole Adamson brought out the Canadian and Albertan flags.
The Junior and Intermediate StarSkaters used the first song of the program to warm up their muscles and get a feel for the ice before their individual programs later in the evening. Kennedy Adamson, Taylor Adamson, Nicole Ellis and Julia Lomond showed off their stroking skills with strength, power, agility and flexibility.
The first stop on the journey through space came from the Stage 2 group who “Walked on the Sun”. They consisted of Cole Adamson, Taya Brindle, Hailey DeGroot, Etta Elphick, Kaden Gauthier, Alexis Klemmensen and Colby Nelson. Their second performance was just as fun to watch. The costumes that the parents made were fantastic as they dressed their little ones up to look like astronauts. The costuming was inventive with the use of duct tape, heating vents and hazmat suits.
It is always fun to watch the littlest one skate, and fall but get right back up again and continue on with their program. Abbey Everett, Madison Gates and Katie Ings-Harder showed off their first skills to the song “Venus” by Shocking Blue, and again later to “Iris” by the Goo Goo Dolls.
Julia Lomond, a second year Star Skater from Carbon and a Grade 4 student at Standard School, performed her first solo to “Mr. Saxobeat” by Alenadra Stan. Fifteen year old Nicole Ellis, a Program Assistant who has been skating for 9 years followed her program with “Golden Age” by the Asteroids Galaxy. She is working on the last Senior Bronze dance and Introductory Interpretive this year in Standard.
Kennedy Adamson, a 14 year old grade 9 student in Standard School has been skating since she was 4. She is currently working on her Junior Silver dances and the Keats & Rocker and Introductory Interpretive. This year Kennedy has tested and passed her Preliminary Freeskate and Junior Bronze Skills. She performed her solo to “Barbie Girl” by Aqua.
The final soloist for the evening was 12 year old Taylor Adamson/ Taylor is one of the dedicated Canskate Program Assistants. She mainly focused on her Preliminary Skills this year. Taylor chose to dance to one of her favourite Country Music singers Drew Gregory’s “Lay it out There”.
President of the Skate Club, Christina Adamson said, “Standard Skate Club had a successful year and will be skating for two more weeks in the Club doing tests and getting their report cards and just having fun”.
The Club looks forward and encourages everyone in the community to come out and participate in their next season which will start October 2013.
