The Youth Club of Strathmore has been working hard over the last few months to get the centre ready for the kids.
“We have a few things to finalize though we are hoping to begin running programs out of the centre in March,” said Colina Clark, program coordinator for the Youth Club of Strathmore.
“As in any project, materials are needed to ensure the project’s success. The Youth Club of Strathmore has a vision, and that vision is to provide quality programs for our community. I’d like to see a well rounded facility so that we can offer more programs for more community members.”
The Youth Club has a wish list of some of the items they are hoping for. It includes a stereo and speakers, a microphone and speakers, round café tables, café chairs, a file cabinet, telephone, newer computers and software, and kitchen supplies.
“The items are needed, something to work toward. For instance, the kitchen supplies are needed because we now have our own kitchen to run our Chef program out of. It is a very popular program. Previously, we relied on our community supporters’ kitchens to operate the program successfully,” said Clark.
Not only is there a need for some material items, Clark said the Youth Club is also still looking for volunteers to lead the programs, and for a volunteer coordinator.
Clark said the club will be offering two sessions of eight week programming, in March/April and May/June. The programs include Mad Science, Chef, Extreme Kids, Jr. Leadership and Sr. Leadership.
“We’d also like to offer workshops: 1st Aid, Babysitting, Bullying, Keep It Kool, Self-Esteem along with Drug Awareness which SWAT recently hosted. All of the workshops would be based on interest and available facilitators. In addition, we will be offering summer camp again this year, with registration beginning in May,” said Clark.
