When the UFA Bisons ran into some injury problems at the Mac’s Midget Hockey Tournament, Zach Wittenburg made the most of his opportunity.
The Wheatland Chiefs prized defenceman, who is an affiliate player with UFA, stepped into action during the final round robin game and all three playoff contests, impressing Bisons head coach Jeremy Friesen in the process.
“He’s a guy that we’ve had to use due to injuries and things significantly throughout the year – I think that may have been his 10th or 11th game,” said the coach. “We’re comfortable with him and what he brings to the table. He’s got some offensive ability too that we’ve haven’t seen quite yet, but he’s bought right in.
“He has stepped in for (the injured players) and picked up where they left off. So he’s doing whatever it takes to help the guys out and win.
“He understands the magnitude of this tournament as well, it’s a great opportunity for him and he’s done everything in his power to seize that opportunity.”
Despite not being part of the regular Bisons lineup, Wittenburg is familiar with the team and their program. He was also a member of last season’s Wheatland Chiefs, who won the league championship with current Bisons Rylan Muenchrath, Devon Westby, Alex Bechtold and Wilson Sproule.
“They’re really tight, very passionate players and a great coaching staff,” said Wittenburg of his affiliate team. “Everyone bonds and it’s like a second family for them. I’ve played with (or against) most for all my life, so they all know me and whatnot. It’s an easy transition.”
Wittenburg was given a regular shift during the games he’s played and made the most of them. He was given time on the power play and the penalty kill.
“I’m used to it, I’ve played a lot of games with them,” said Wittenburg. “It was a great experience.”
