Junior golfer from Strathmore, Zach Olson (16), recently qualified to attend the Frank Lindsay Junior Boys Championship to be played at the Wintergreen Golf Course in Bragg Creek, July 3-6.
The Alberta Golf Association Junior Qualifying Calgary tournament took place at McCall Lake Golf Course in Calgary on June 11. The tournament was for boys 18 and under. To move on to playing at the provincial level, the boys were to score less than 80. Olson made it through qualifiers with scoring an overall 76.
Olson said he feels confident leading up to the tournament but is also feeling “a little nervous, I have never went before but hopefully I’ll play pretty good and can stay until the last day.”
The players will compete on the first two days of the tournament, July 3-4, and depending on how they score, will continue to play the final two days of the tournament, July 5-6.
Carrying a strong golf background, Olson said he began playing the game at the young age of five.
“I started pretty young. I learned to play with my dad and with my grandparents at Wolf Creek (Golf Course).”
To prepare, Olsen said he is practising more frequently and is continuing to take weekly golf lessons in Calgary.
Looking ahead, future goals for Olson include playing in more tournaments at a competitive level.
“I would try out again hopefully (for provincials next year) and go to a few more tournaments; I have quite a few left for this year still.”
