The gunning of many bikes ripping up the highway was heard amidst the hoopla of Sports Day in Standard as those who participated in the Strathmore Poker Run made one of their stops.
Rene Owen, a biker who has been on the Strathmore Poker Run Committee for the last 10 out of 13 years said that it has been another successful ride and season so far.
To date the group has generously given Kids Cancer Care $119,000 over the last 10 years. On Friday evening the head-shave event surpassed $9,032 at the King Eddy Pub in Strathmore. Last year the record money for the night for one person was Kris Owen at $4,400 and the record was broken again by “2 Dogs” Keith at $5,031. Rene says, “Such a great cause for all us to be a part of and it is awesome to see such support from the communities”.
“Dirt Dog” Matt Janzen from Standard started the run 13 years ago. Since his passing in 2002 the riders have remained loyal and ride in his name and make sure that one of their stops is in Standard. They are hoping to come again next year but will have to wait and see about Standard as the Hotel/Bar has been sold and new owners will have to be contacted.
Participants come all over with their “beasts” of every colour, size and style. The group was getting ready to have their family Rodeo just outside of Strathmore the following day. For more information on any of the events they participate in contact jjverhey@hotmail.com.
