The community of Standard came out in full force to participate in its annual Sports Day activities on the weekend.
The morning started early with a pancake breakfast at the community hall for early risers at 7 a.m.
The parade festivities got underway after breakfast as many floats and participants had to be organized for the 10 a.m. parade. A piping band from Calgary “Maxwell Clan” came out to start the parade. There were over 25 entries for the parade this year and lots of candy thrown to the kids. One of the highlights of the morning was the baseball organization’s float, which held its Rookie and Mosquitoe teams. Both groups had a successful season this spring and were happy to wear their red and whites.
During the day many ball games were held at all three diamonds in town. The children’s events held at the community park were the best, by far, that the community has seen in years. Many people commented that they enjoyed the area away from the diamond and that it was both kid and parent friendly. Jen Jensen (organizer of the children’s events) worked hard at providing things for all age levels. The kids got to play a series of field games, there were two bounce houses, a petting zoo, and of course a favorite for many years Lucie Brouillard (world champion face and body painter) from Drumheller who managed to get over 70+ kids painted in the short time that she was there.
The community held its annual beef supper that evening at the hall and in conjunction the library held its annual silent auction. The library was pleased to have brought in $1,358, which was above what they took in last year.
The festivities came to a close at the community dance in which local country music artist Drew Gregory pleased the crowds with his performance.
Plans are already formulating for next years events.
