Local author Derek Donais was at the Strathmore Municipal Library promoting Revelation, the second installment of his MetalMagic trilogy, Sept. 29.
“It’s the continuation of the main story where Jaren now that’s he’s figured out that he can use the magic he has to figure out why it’s so different for him that he doesn’t need to use the metal,” said Donais.
“Why is he the only one in the whole land who’s basically free of that connection to the metal and at the same time certain powers that be who have a vested interest in keeping the status quo, so that means more trouble for him and as well his sister and his friend…and the king.”
Donais’ first book in the trilogy, Talisman, took almost five years to complete. Revelation was much easier to put together, especially after getting to know his characters a bit better.
“Before I sat down to actually start writing the first one I had the story lines for all three written out. Not necessarily step-by-step but a few points to here and there and where it would go and where it would end up,” said Donais.
“Not only knowing where the story was going, but also now having had the characters go through the first book you learn about them and you know how they react to certain situations and what their behaviours are and attitudes so it’s a lot easier to say what they are going to do in any given situation once you’ve already had them go through a number of different experiences.”
For now Donais is still substitute teaching and writing part time, which is a good balance for him. He is also working on two other books, one for young readers and another science fiction that will be post-apocalyptic, set in the Calgary area, and some short stories. The two installments of the MetalMagic trilogy can be found at Chapters and Indigo stores, or by ordering a digital copy through your e-reader.
