Rugby season nearing the end

The Spartans Rugby season is wrapping up quickly. Zones begin on Tuesday for both the girls and the boys. The girls hosted a game against Olds on May 22 on the Strathmore High school field. The boys played in Oilfields in the Quarter Finals on May 22.
The girls wrapped their regular season with a 2-3 record leaving them in a three-way tie for fourth. Our results could have been better but the lack of bodies hurt us in the end. In the final games of the season we played down two girls the entire game and were still competitive in the second half. With zones starting this week I believe it will be to our advantage.
In the regular season we play unlimited subs, which allows the big teams to always have fresh bodies on the field. We have been playing with no subs for a long time so our girls know what it’s like to play a full game. The South Central Zone gets two berths so all Strathmore has to do is make the zone final and then qualify for provincials. Like every sport at our school, provincials is our goal.
The boys wrapped their season with a tight game against High River. The boys got off to a slow start and were down 14-0 in the first 10 minutes. After that the Spartans tightened up and played a good game. The Spartan boys had the opportunity to score a couple of times in the second half but couldn’t get across the goal line. For most of the second half the Spartans kept the ball in High River ends. It was a hard fought game that was well played by both teams. At the conclusion of the matches both Spartans were treated to an outstanding rugby tradition. We were invited into the school for supper with the opposition. It’s an amazing thing to see all the players mixed together sharing stories and laughter. Results from the May 22 games were not available at press time. Look for them in the next edition of the Strathmore Times.
