Hair for Haiti was a fundraiser organized by eighteen-year-old Rachel Wegner to raise money for the Eben-ezer Clinic in Haut-Limbé, Haiti. When she was only eight years old, Wegner took her first mission trip to the clinic with Hope Community Covenant Church, followed by a second trip in 2010.
Kyla from NV Hair and Body Studio, a beautiful hairdresser who has also been to Haiti with Hope, agreed to shave Rachel’s head at Hope Community Covenant Church on May 27. Wegner decided to give her hair to Locks of Love so she grew her hair long enough to donate. She went out in the rain to raise money and miraculously raised over $3,000 for the clinic.
“I’ve been to Haiti a couple of times and fell in love with the place. I want to go back some time but I can’t afford it, so I decided to shave my head to raise money for the [Eben-ezer] Clinic,” she said. “Originally I wanted to try to raise $2,000 but thought that was too extreme of a goal so I lowered it to $1,500. I reached that goal and was encouraged by my youth leader to up it to $3,000. Strathmore community helped me raise $3,900 and there is a bit more coming in.”
Wegner also makes beautiful, hand-knotted bracelets and sells them to raise money for the clinic.
Did you know that all around us there are countries that are very poor and it’s very hard to survive? I would like to go to Haiti and experience what it is like to live without as much money as we have and to see how things go on there. Until then I give what I can.
