While most of his friends were planning their summer vacations and sending out resumes for summer jobs, Cadet Mihaly Varga, 13, from 903 Strathmore in Cheadle had bigger plans.
On July 8th, Cadet Varga arrived at Penhold Air Cadet Summer Training Centre, located just outside the city of Red Deer, Alberta. Cadet Varga is here to take part in the General Training course, a two-week long introduction to all aspects of Air Cadets. Mihaly commented about his first time away at camp: “To be away from home feels like you have lost something and you can’t find it until camp is over but I am really liking it here at Penhold.”
During this course, Cadet Varga will have opportunities to learn about drill, dress and deportment; air rifle marksmanship; adventure training, which includes making improvised shelters and snares; as well as the basics of aerospace.
Penhold Air Cadet Summer Training Centre is one of the oldest cadet camps in Canada, and certainly the busiest. Cadets from all over the Prairie region and some from as far away as British Columbia and Quebec flock to the centre, which can hold almost 800 cadets at a time.
Cadet Varga will not only gain valuable skills at General Training, he will also get the opportunity to learn about citizenship and make friends with cadets from all over Canada. Mihaly Varga’s first experience at Cadet Camp will be an experience he will never forget.
