All was not quiet on Sunday afternoon in Rosebud as the sounds of music echoed off the granaries from the 15 Minutes of Fame stage nestled between the Thorny Rose Café and the Rosebud Opera House.
Families with kids and animals armed with blankets and snacks scattered the grass in front of the stage to be entertained by a slew of musical and talented artists from in and around the area. Featured artists included: Calum Graham,
Cara Luft,
Lewis and Royal,
Jessica Benini,
Cassia Schramm, and
Travis Friesen
and many more…
Lewis and Royal have been described as troubadours of comedy and story, playing their brand of music across the prairies for 15 years. Surprisingly, this is their first time taking the 15 Minutes stage.
Justine Vandergrift is an Alberta based-singer songwriter who has been singing and creating music her entire life. Her witty and insightful lyrics coupled with her passionate one-of-a-kind voice make Vandergrift stand out long after any performance. In 2011, Vandergrift released her first full album Yes Alright Ok, which she performed at the 15 Minutes of Fame folk festival on the Rosebud stage. It got excellent reviews and airtime on CBC Radio, CKUA and other Canadian and international stations. Not long after the release, Vandergrift was awarded a recording grant from Up 97.7/Rawlco Radio and went on to release “So Far…” in June 2012.
Schramm grew up in Olds, Alberta making music with her family. As a graduate of Rosebud School of the Arts, she has been found serenading tables in the Mercantile and singing her heart out on the Opera House stage. Her album Let the Music In, recorded by Kjel Erickson, was released last year and includes many Rosebud musicians. She is fuelled by the spirit that is alive in music, and was thrilled to be playing at this year’s 15 Minutes of Fame.
Other events in Rosebud during the festival were a Contemporary Dance Performance
by Emma Cobb called A Dream Within a Dream, and graduating student Lennette Randall’s outdoor theatre performance Under the Mango Tree.
The afternoon featured street vendors, ice cream cones, thrift sales, art sales and just a great family experience. Rosebud can hold its head high for yet another successful 15 Minutes of Fame event, which gets better every year.
