The band ‘The Lovebullies’ is coming to Strathmore with a time machine to take you back, but don’t make the mistake of thinking it is old artist rehash. The Lovebullies are radical.
“Our style has settled more in the decade of the 60’s. It is a genre which was really exciting for music. There was rock ‘n roll going on too. You get rock ‘n roll, melody and harmony and lyrical content,” said lead singer Caroline Connolly about their song lineup.
The band composes their own tunes that have placed them as favorites across many clubs in Calgary. They have opened for bands such as the B52’s and the Beach Boys. Check out the sound clips on YouTube. They extend their love of music to corporate events and private bookings too.
Each member, naturally gifted, picked up instruments and learned them without formal training, inspired by the tunes they loved to hear. They first formed the band over 10 years ago as the Jane West Band and later The Fabulous Devil Dolls, then settled into the name The Lovebullies. Members are Chantal Vitalis -lead guitar, Joni Brent-base, Kevin Herring-lead guitar, drummer -Paul Jahn, and finally lead singer Caroline Connolly. Vitalis and Herring flex their music versatility by also playing for Kris Demeanor and His Crack Band (Vitalis), and the trio Dice Deluxe (Herring).
Connolly says that their music is instinctive and the band members complement each other musically. She attributes that to the group monitoring their gigs and making note of what works. She also said there is a personal aspect to the cohesion.
“Friendship wise we all love each other as people. We have grown up together, Watching lives change and stretch over the years and watching our families grow,” said Connolly.
As to why people should grab their go-go boots and jump in the Cadillac to come see them, Connolly offers some suggestions.
“We have a really broad appeal. We entertain. We tell jokes and interact with the crowd. They will walk out of here with the songs stuck in their heads,” said Connolly. “The bottom line is we love to play and have fun wherever we play.”
