Fiddler on the roof

Holy Cross Collegiate (HCC) is in the works of perfecting its first musical ‘Fiddler on the Roof.’
The story line follows a father in the early 1900’s who is fighting between tradition, and allowing his daughters to choose husbands they actually love.
“He has five daughters so it totally occupies his and his wife’s time trying to find them husbands, that’s what they need to do is find them husbands so that they have someone to look after them. Of course all of his daughters find somebody that they love and they don’t want to marry whoever (they are set up with),” said Sarah Lyons, band director for HCC.
Many schools throughout the Christ the Redeemer school division produce musicals, and so Lyons and HCC drama teacher Jen Yersh decided to join the ranks after realizing they both have strong fine arts programs.
There is a cast of approximately 30 students, which hindered a few possible productions. In the end the teachers decided ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ was a good fit for their school.
“It’s all about faith and family values and that’s really what our school is about, teaching the importance of faith and family. Even though it’s old, it’s set in the turn of the 19th century, he loves his daughters and he wants the best for them so the message is still the same I think,” said Lyons.
“It’s a fun musical, it really is a fun musical,” said Yersh.
“I think it’s a really good production in the sense that nothing is overdramatic, nothing is beyond reach of what would actually happen in real life.”
Students began practicing in October, and on March 23 and 24 they will have a chance to show the community that their hard work has paid off. Both shows are being held at 7 p.m., and tickets will be available at the door. It is $5 for children 12 and under, and $10 for adults.
