Oktoberfest originated in Germany, but is an event that is well-known world-wide for its great food and, of course, its great beer. Strathmore’s downtown businesses have decided to jump on the Oktoberfest bandwagon for the evening of Oct. 20. Beer will not be sold on the street but anyone looking for a beverage can stop in the King Eddy or the Strathmore Hotel.
“We’re trying to encourage more people to come down to the downtown core to see all that we have to offer, and that’s why we put on different events downtown a couple of times a year,” said Sheila Crispin, owner of Joyland Theatre and an organizer of Oktoberfest.
All the festivities will take place on 2nd and 3rd Avenues. The streets will be closed off so that people may stroll down them beginning at 4 p.m. with everything officially kicking off at 5 p.m.
The band Cliffhanger will be providing live entertainment. There will be authentic German sausage and sauerkraut, and hotdogs and nachos for the kids. People are encouraged to drop by the Leary Centre for some tasty treats after dinner.
In addition to all the mouthwatering goodies, there will also be an opportunity for shopping with local merchants hosting in-store specials and sidewalk sales. Make sure to check each business for any potential raffles they may be hosting. Everything begins on Oct. 20 and will run from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.
