Calling all hockey players

A&W Strathmore is ramping up its fundraising efforts with MS (Multiple Sclerosis) Day only a few weeks away. To date the restaurant has raised $5,438 bringing them just over halfway to their goal.
The ‘A Million Pennies for MS’ campaign kick started the year and Manager Will Whatley said people are still bringing in pennies to donate, even though the event hasn’t been advertised in awhile.
There was a spring garage sale in May, and next up starting on August 11 are the first games of the second annual 4-on-4 street hockey tournament.
This year Whatley said he has the sponsors, but is lacking the players. He is hoping to get a bunch of last minute registrations.
“It’ll be set up in the back here (behind the restaurant), so we’ll have the music going and the tent up,” said Whatley.
The hope is to have three divisions with eight teams, with games starting at 2 p.m. on game day. August 11 and 12 will be for the players who are aged 15 and under. The weekend on the 18 and 19 is for co-ed players and the 25 and 26 will be for the more competitive players. Participants will need to bring their own hockey sticks but nets are provided.
“You pretty much just need your helmet and your stick,” said Whatley.
“A bunch of them didn’t wear helmets last year but I think under 15 definitely should.”
The games will be played round robin style in order to determine the playoff teams.
“They’ll get to play three games guaranteed, the winner will get five and the first place one in each division there’s gold, silver, bronze medals and first place gets $150 prize,” said Whatley.
The entry fee is $100 per team. Each team will have a maximum of eight players with four players plus a goalie on each side at a time.
