Megan Mertz and Darah Clarke, who are about to turn nine-years-old, decided to plan a joint birthday party this year since their birthdays are only a day apart, Dec. 21 and 22 respectively. The two have been friends since they were four-years-old and so it was an easy decision for them.
Because there were going to be so many people attending the joint party the girls wanted a big space and ended up hosting it in the Crowther Memorial Junior High school gym on Dec. 1. The date was picked because it was when most of their friends could go and because the Clarke family usually goes to Kimberly, B.C., for Christmas break.
“When they decided they were going to have a joint birthday party they decided that that would be too many people and they didn’t need that many presents for themselves. So they thought instead of getting them for themselves they would share it with other people who might need it more than they did,” said Lori Clarke, Darah’s mom.
“It was just the one day on Dec. 1, it was just the one day and everybody just brought a bunch of stuff,” said Darah.
With Christmas just around the corner the girls wanted to do what they could to help out.
“Cause there’s some people who don’t have enough to money to buy food. They have family and friends and they might not have enough money or food so (now) they (can) have a feast with their family and have a good one with a lot of food,” said Mertz.
“We were really proud of the girls because neither one of them really fought the idea, they were on board from the real get go and they said this was a great idea,” said Lori.
The girls brought the food to put under the tree at Brentwood Elementary School. It is being donated to the Christmas Hamper Society.
