Winter walk

It’s almost that time of year where once again Robert Breitwieser and HEAL, Healthy Eating, Active Living, are asking people to participate in the third annual Winter Walk Day. In previous years, people gathered at the Bank Athletic Club. They then walked around Kinsmen Park, down around the library and back to the Athletic Club for healthy snacks.
“This year we’re going to do it a little different. We decided just to plug into www.shapeab.com, and encourage people to walk where ever they are,” said Breitwieser.
“We just want to encourage people to get out and walk, enjoy the fresh air in their own community and meet their neighbours and have a good time.”
He said people could go to the Civic Centre, where there is indoor walking available, or maybe in their community, downtown or at a park. He said HEAL would like to see people register on the shapeab link, so they can have an idea afterwards how many people participated. Breitwieser said many of the schools have taken part in their own type of winter walk day for a number of years.
HEAL is trying to get the banks to challenge each other. Last year, CIBC, the Chinook Credit Union and Royal Bank participated and challenged one another and Breitwieser would like to see that again this year. The best way to keep tally on how much walking is done is with a pedometer, which is a great tool.
“If people want to buy pedometers, they are now available again at the Bank Athletic Club at a reasonable cost,” said Breitwieser.
Winter Walk Day is Feb. 9, and everyone can participate by either signing up at www.shapeab.com or by just getting outside and going for a minimum of a 15 minute stroll.
