Take a chance at being a part of history

A new history book is in the works for the Town of Strathmore and the call is out to all residents to help come up with a name.
“It’s kind of a neat concept that got thrown around during a conversation I was having with the author,” said Bob Sobol, town councillor and member of the centennial committee.
“We’ve basically given the author pretty wide berth in regards to where he can go with this thing, and (we) certainly have no objections to him coming up with a name for the book and rightfully so.”
Sobol said it was the author, Paul Sonsteby’s idea to ask the public what they would think about a title for the book, which is how the history book-naming contest came about.
Sobol approached the centennial committee to see if they would be interested in taking it on. Sobol said members of the committee were eager to do it, and almost immediately began coming up with ideas on how to put the process together that would see people submitting suggestions.
“We have put the ballots in the newspapers and of course there’s some available at the town office if anybody wants to stop by there and grab that,” said Sobol.
“Basically it’s anyone from the general public that can do it, that can submit names. Council and members of the committee are not allowed to, but anyone else is.”
The ballot box is located at the town office. There are three judges who are all members of the centennial committee, and none of whom are members of council.
“We’re fairly excited about it because we were having some trouble ourselves. We were trying to think an appropriate name and we want something different, something that will hopefully encompass not only Strathmore’s past, but Strathmore’s future,” said Sobol.
“That’s what we’re hoping for. That’s what this book is all about, it’s a book about recognizing your past but putting a little bit of hope for the future in, and that’s basically what the end of the book is in regards to the celebrations 2011. We’ve come a long way and we’re going to go a long way.”
The contest closes on Sept. 30 at 4:30 p.m. and all entries must be submitted on an official ballot before being put into the ballot box at the town office. The person who submits the winning name will be given two tickets to the gala on Oct. 15, and will be recognized in the history book as having picked the successful name.
