Strathmore teen awarded citizen of the month

The onus was on Councillor Earl Best this month to determine whom he thinks deserves the July Citizen of the Month Award. After sifting through the usual suspects in his head, Best finally settled on someone out of the ordinary. 

He nominated Strathmore teen Brooklyn Davidson, who is well known in the community for helping out with different events.

“Because it’s interesting to see someone, who dedicates their life being as short as it may be to the Town of Strathmore, and for someone to be involved in the town as much as Brooklyn is, it most impresses me,” said Best, about why he picked Davidson. 

“This decision was made before this thing at the skateboard park ever happened.”

Best said he had been thinking of the people who have been in the town for a number of years representing the town, and said a lot of it is because it’s their job. Best said in Davidson’s case it’s because she wants to. 

“I’m honoured,” said Davidson.

“I just like helping, in church we come up with service project ideas, so we’re kind of always thinking of what we can do to help out.” 

While many people have great ideas about how they can help, most don’t see the ideas to fruition, which Davidson said is the best part. 

Davidson is a music lover who volunteered her time to play piano in Strathmore High School’s, SHS, production of Narnia this past school year. She teaches piano lessons to younger children, and theory lessons for advanced piano students to help prepare them for their RCM exams. 

Davidson had also spent time playing for Mrs. Steeves Brentwood Junior Choir. 

She is a member of the Student Leadership Club, SLC, at SHS and has helped organize different fundraisers and fun events in the school, including a fundraiser held earlier this year to help put together school kits for children in third world countries who couldn’t afford them. 

She was a part of the Experienced Essay Editors at SHS, helping ESL students with their English by editing their essays. 

This summer Davidson is off to Austria, thanks to the Lions Youth Exchange program. Each year the Lions International Youth Camp and Exchange Program send youth to travel abroad and learn about other cultures. The Exchange program typically runs for two, to four weeks. Davidson will be gone for the full four weeks.
