The Spartans senior basketball team took part in a tournament hosted at Strathmore High School, SHS, gym Feb. 11 – 12. The Spartans had a rough start, losing their first game on Friday.
“We took it on the chin Friday night for sure,” said coach Kyle Larson. The team pulled together and beat Vauxhall first thing Saturday morning 60-52. They played against Drumheller later Saturday to see who would place fourth and fifth in the tournament. The Spartans took fifth place, losing to Drumheller 63-52.
“Over the weekend our defense was really good.  Our defensive system, it seems the boys have finally figured them out and are playing,” said Larson.
“Right now we’ve got to shoot the basketball better. That’s the number one thing that we have to do better. We’re running our offenses, we get good looks at the basket, we just aren’t making the shot.”
With a little more practice it should be easy for the team to solve the problem. Currently the team is sitting in fifth place in the league and Feb. 16 was the last league game. The result from the game was not available at press time. All that’s left for the boys is playoffs, which will be taking place near the end of February.
“With playoffs here, hopefully we’ll get it going now at the right time,” said Larson.
