The Strathmore Spartans JV girls volleyball team spent the weekend in Brooks, playing in the annual tournament. The girls faced the Brooks Buffalos first off, beating them 25-12 and 25-22 before splitting games with Rosemary and Trochu but were still able to finish first in their pool.
“The girls struggled this weekend but they still found a way to win,” said coach Jerry Flaws.
In the quarterfinals the Spartans faced Bow Valley Composite from Cochrane, beating them in two straight games to land a spot in the semi-finals.
Flaws said the Spartans played Rosemary and needed heroics to squeeze by them and advance to the finals.
Rosemary played amazing defense against the Spartans causing some frustration and winning the first set, said Flaws. Rosemary’s defense held strong in the second and they lead the entire set.
With a score of 24-17 for Rosemary, Spartan Kayla McGougan went back to serve. With the help of McGougan’s strong serves and a solid team effort by all of the girls, the Spartans squeaked out a 27-25 win in the second set. The Spartans won the third set 15-8 advancing to the final.
The final game saw the Spartans facing Brooks again, only this time the team struggled to get into a solid rhythm. In the end the Spartans were unable to defeat the Buffalos again. The team walked away with their second silver medal of the year. They have now won three medals in three tournaments, one of which was gold.
The JV boys Spartans also brought home silver from their tournament in Rosemary this past weekend.
