Santa will be strapping on a pair of skates on Dec. 18 when he will spend a few hours at the Family Centre skating with the kids. The event, Skate with Santa, is hosted by Relay for Life, and will begin at 4:15 p.m.
“Another Relay for Life team has done it in the past and it’s been phenomenal. The first year they just started it with skate with Santa. Then the following year it grew to be skate with Santa and a BBQ, and this year they are doing a silent auction and 50/50 draw,” said Kristel Lang, a committee member with the Relay for Life.
“Every year they’ve been adding to it so I thought that would be a really good idea for Strathmore to do because we don’t have anything like that, that I’ve seen so far.”
The event is a fundraiser for both Relay for Life and for the Christmas Hamper Society. Lang said they will be collecting non-perishable food items for the hamper society. Parents willing to brave the ice can take photos of their children skating with Santa, and there will be free candy canes for the kids.
“I’m hoping to have people dressed up as elves, handing out candy canes,” said Lang.
Quality Dog Grooming is sponsoring one hour of the rental and Lang said she is still hoping to find someone to sponsor the second hour and possibly donate candy canes.
Melissa David, owner of Quality Dog Grooming formed the team Paws for a Cure this year in memory of two people she has lost to cancer.
“I want to honour their memory while continuing their fight and have been blessed with a great team of family and friends who share my goal,” said David.
“We are relaying in memory of Dallas and Suzanne who fought hard and their courage was an inspiration to us all. Watching the pain their friends and family had to endure as a result of their loss was heartbreaking. This disease must be stopped and we are honoured to continue their fight.”
Tickets are $3 a person with a non-perishable food item, or $5 without, and it’s $12 per family, or $10 with a non-perishable food item.
