The Strathmore Rockies 2010-2011 season officially ended Sunday night against the Edmonton Chimos. The girls played a double header against their rivals from the north, with both games being held at the Strathmore Family Centre.
The Rockies struggled with injuries over the weekend, with ten players left off the active roster. However, that didn’t stop the girls from having a thrilling weekend. Saturday’s game was hard fought but the Rockies lost with a final score of 3-0.
Sunday was women’s hockey at its finest. After a tight first period the score was 1-0 for the Chimos. The Rockies got into a bit of penalty trouble and two of the Chimo’s four goals were on the power play. At the end of the second the Chimos led 3-1.
The Rockies battled back in the third with a goal from Kaley Herman and one from Danielle Boyce in the final minutes of the game. It was a thrilling period, though the Rockies could not score the tying goal. The game ended 4-3 for the Chimos. Goalie Lundy Day had a wonderful outing stopping 30 of the Chimo’s 34 shots.
“It was a tough season for everyone,” said Rockies captain Kaley Herman after the game. “We only played three games before Christmas so it was a challenge. Also, playing with only two lines for the majority of the season didn’t help things. But after Christmas I think we really started to jell as a team. We put in the effort and finished strong.”
