The Reds peewee baseball team hosted the provincial Tier 2 championships July 29 – 31. They lost the first game of the weekend, but won the rest of the games, finishing off as the champions.
“They were ecstatic. Our bats were really, really strong. We were really tight the first game so we ended up losing the first game. Then the games after that, we kind of came up with a bit of an exercise to keep the boys loose and they came with their bats. We really swung the bat well the rest of the weekend,” said coach Daren Kennett.
“Then on the semi-final game, we beat Bonnyville who we hadn’t beat all year. We beat them 15-1. We got to the final game and our bats were good and our defense was awful. We ended up winning 24-23.”
It was three and half-hour game, and Kennett said the win wasn’t pretty, but they were happy with the win.
“Oh, there’s everything to work on. I think you just got to keep working on all your baseball skills. I don’t think you can ever say you get there for sure, (there’s) lots of stuff to work on,” hw said.
Kennett said at the beginning of the season he went home and told his wife he hoped they would win a couple of games this year and was pretty sure they would be Tier 4. He said the kids worked really hard and ended up winning Tier 2, which was a real achievement.
“We had a great group of parents and our parents all pitched in and helped and we had a lot of positive comments on our hosting, so hats off to our parents they did an excellent job,” said Kennett.
“That always makes it nice when you hear those kind of comments. I think the big thing for the team is hard work and dedication paid off and they can say that they are the provincial champions.”
