On Thursday Jan. 13, MP Kevin Sorenson was in Strathmore at the Town Offices to talk to his constituents about the federal budget and ways to balance it. According to Sorenson the Prime Minister sent a letter to all members of parliament and encouraged them to hold meetings throughout their constituency.
“We’re listening to people on what they would like to see in this next budget that will be coming out February/March,” said Sorenson.
“As I travel around the constituency, people are saying that we want to make sure that you have a budget that will sooner or later bring us back to a balanced budget.”
He said people don’t want to see the big spending, and new program spending. Instead they want to see the government get it back to balanced budget and while investing in the programs that are there not hacking and slashing. He said on a smaller issue, there were some suggestions dealing with the beef industry and how to continue to hold slaughter capacity in Canada, and of course there was discussion about the military.
“Again people are concerned that we don’t hack and slash on the military spending. The question came today about the equipment and why is it, that our equipment still isn’t up to what it should be.”
He said he had a few people speak about postal delivery in the area. Sorenson said it is not specific to Strathmore and that there are issues he will take to Minister Merrifield and also to Canada Post.
Another concern constituents brought up is no new taxes, which is always a point discussed in regards to the budget.
