The Strathmore Youth Council was first formed to give a voice to the area’s teens. It is also to help provide a connection between Strathmore and Wheatland County youth and the municipal councillors.
While the new youth council is working hard to start implementing ideas into reality, financial support is always something the council will need.
In late November students from Holy Cross Collegiate and Strathmore High School told town council of their idea for a youth council and presented a request for $3,000. Council approved the motion, stating their full support for the students.
On Dec. 14 Mayor Steve Grajczyk made a personal donation to the youth council. Grajczyk donated a Calgary Flames jersey that has been signed by all of the players on the current roster.
“I bought it at a fundraiser out of Calgary and I was looking for a group that would be (interested in) reselling it so to speak. I don’t need it, and I thought if it could help somebody out in the community that would be great,” said Grajczyk.
“The youth council came to the meeting one night and I was so impressed by them, and so was council, that we helped them out to get a start. Hopefully they make a lot of money with it to help them with their council.”
“We just want to say thank you so much for giving it to us and helping us out and getting us started,” said Jenna Gigantelli, a youth council member and Strathmore High School student.
