The sun was shining, and the Strathmore ball diamonds were buzzing with excitement. Parents, grandparents and other spectators watched in anticipation. The dark clouds rolling in from the north held off long enough for the ball games to be played on June 1 – by both the Peewee Strathmore Reds, and the Squirts girls team.
The Peewees were up against Hussar.
“We’ve had quite a few new players this year, but they’re finally coming around and playing very well together,” said Naomi Hickey, manager of the team.
The peewees have been playing since May and have had their ups and downs.
“They lost the first three games but tied against Drumheller the day before” said Hickey.
Jim Stevenson is the head coach for the Strathmore Peewee Reds and has been doing a great job with the kids.
While the Peewee Reds were playing on one diamond, the Squirts girls team was playing on another against the Calgary South Bow River team.
They have played 16 games so far this year, and are currently winning their division.
“They are playing extremely well together and they’ve been playing in Calgary most of the time and not encountering any problems” said Assistant Coach Rob Pettifer.
Both baseball teams have been doing excellent considering the strange weather that this Alberta spring has presented.
