Holy Cross Collegiate, HCC, junior volleyball teams faced some tough competition on Oct. 15 when they hosted a fun round robin tournament. Each of the boys and girls junior B teams faced four other teams, and at the end of the tournament the teams with the most wins came in first.
Both HCC teams brought home first place in the tournament, making the school proud.
Grant Burgess stepped in to be coach of the boys team this year.
“They needed a coach this year so I volunteered to coach. I used to coach soccer and I’ve coached badminton before, and I used to play a lot of club ball. I’m a parent who stepped up because they needed a coach,” said Burgess.
He said for many of the Grade 7 and 8 students, it is their first time playing organized ball. He said the veterans are very strong servers which he said makes a big difference, because that is where the strength is needed at this level. There are some things the team can improve on, which is the same for any team at any level.
“Ideally their hitting, their serves are good, their passes are good but until you get those developed you can’t really do the hitting so once they get that, their hitting will come,” said Burgess.
“I would say the girls just need to keep talking. If they can talk and communicate they’ll do really well,” said coach of the junior B girls and Jennifer Yersh.
Yersh said the girls have been doing really well, and have won almost every game in league play this season.
