The kindergarten to Grade 2 students of Westmount school put on a musical called “How does your garden groove” for friends and family on June 2. For four months, the students practiced songs at lunch time. The show was about 25 minutes long, and was held in the Westmount school gymnasium.
Jana Kopp, the music teacher at Westmount Elementary along with Amanda Ball, took on the task of working with the children over many noon hours. Kopp worked with the children on the musical portion, learning five songs for the show. Ball took on the drama portion of the play.
Twenty two kids were chosen to play small parts throughout the play.
“We tried to pick children who hadn’t had a chance yet to play a more major role,” said Kopp. “Some got the chance to be more participant in the Christmas concert and others in the spring concert.”
Angie Hitch also volunteered her time doing the face painting for the play.
“Angie has been great. She’s helped with other shows by doing the face painting,” said Kopp.
However, Kopp said, “we couldn’t have done it without parent volunteers. They brought snacks during rehearsals. They painted the back drop, and made the decorations for the gym.”
The show was a great success, and many turned out to support the many wonderful performers.
Another play will be put on by the Grades 3 and 4 classes next week, called “Rock and Roll Forever” in the Westmount Elementary gymnasium.
