Strathmore baseball player Logan Crooks will be taking part in the Alberta Zones Baseball Championship, which run from Aug. 12-14 in Red Deer.
The tournament will see the top 15-years-old and under athletes compete for their respected zones.
“Most of the kids that tried out from Strathmore were all first year kids,” explained Crooks about why he thinks he was the only ball player picked from Strathmore.
Last year Crooks played in the Alberta Summer Games, which alternates years with the championship. During the championship the final 20 selections will be made for the Team Alberta prospects, which will have a chance to compete in the Prospect Series versus Manitoba and Saskatchewan, in Saskatchewan.
Though pitching was his focus last year, Crooks has turned his attention more to the infield.
“When you pitch you can’t bat so that’s why. You’ll have a hitter for you, a designated hitter, that’s all they do is hit,” said Crooks.
The goal of playing professional ball one day isn’t something that has changed for the teen.
He is hoping to make it into Vauxhall High School, which is located near Taber, Alberta. Vauxhall offers a successful baseball academy, which is what has caught Crooks’ eye.
Though the season is done for league play, Crooks is looking forward to taking part in the championship this weekend and will keep practicing any way he can over the off-season.
