Its not just math and science in high school anymore, as Standard School brought in a Hockey School for the next four weeks.
As a trial to see the success of the program, and if the kids are willing to participate in years to come, the school and more importantly a local coach, Periard, have put together a four-week program that consists of both dry land training and hockey practice.
The sessions will be running twice a week out of the Standard-Rosebud Arena. Tuesday mornings will consist of dry land and on ice sessions and Thursday mornings will just be on ice sessions.
The purpose of the dry land sessions is to educate the kids about proper lifting and working out techniques to better improve their overall game. Some protocols for dry land training include: Weight Training, “Body” weight training (lifting only body weight),”Cardio” endurance and power, Plyometric/Jump Training, Flexibility and range of motion for skating.
On-Ice is to help develop the skill and game level of each player, with giving them individual skill drills, which is rarely worked on during team practices, as well as, situation drills that will help them understand the game at a new level.
Periard loves to work with communities in the Strathmore area in developing kids in all levels of hockey. “It is an important part of our communities, and to encourage kids to stay in the game as long as possible, while at the same time learning techniques that will hopefully help them when they go on to help minor hockey in their community.”
The costs of the Hockey School Training sessions are being covered by donations from supportive community members.
