Holy Cross Collegiate, HCC, JV girls basketball zones were held at HCC March 11 – 12. The girls won their first game of the weekend by almost 40 points and continued to hold strong for the rest of the weekend. It was the final tournament for the girls and it was their chance to prove themselves as a winning team. The girls succeeded, taking first place and bringing home the banner.
“We are very pleased as this is our school’s first zone championship ever,” said Michael Annicchiarico, athletic director for HCC.
“The team was pretty calm about winning the banner. They were disappointed to lose the league championship to HTA the weekend before,” said JV girls coach Angela MacLean.
“They knew going into zones what they had to do and they were proud when the final game was over. They’re very excited to have that banner displayed in the gym and they are looking forward to next year.”
The star player for the weekend was post player Maggie Short, who scored a total of 53 points over the weekend, 24 of them in the final game. Next year the team is moving up to play senior, and MacLean said she wants the team to continue to develop a stronger defensive game and an offensive press.
