Holy Cross Collegiate, HCC, Junior Hawks hosted a senior varsity basketball tournament Jan. 14 – 15 at the school. Despite facing a higher caliber of teams, the HCC Hawks ended up placing fourth in the tournament, and coach Angela MacLean said the team has shown a lot of improvement.
“I’m pretty pleased with the season so far, we have had a couple of game cancellations lately so we’ll have more games in February,” said MacLean.
So far the team is sitting at 2-1-0 in league play. Due to exams, the team will be taking a two week break before their next league game on Feb. 3. It’ll be a home game for the girls, who will be taking on Strathcona Tweedsmuir.
“Our challenges so far this season are teaching a few rookies our system and working on refining some of our plays, especially our press break.  We practice twice a week,” said MacLean.
The team will be heading to Bassano for a senior tournament which is taking place Jan. 28 – 29.
Some highlights from this weekend were the win over County Central by one point in the tournament opener, and placing fourth in a senior tournament. HCC high scorers for the weekend were: Kaitlin Francis with 47 points; Karsyn Fulmek with 37 points; and Maggie Shortt with 34 points. The guards (rookie and returning) also played great this weekend.
