Over 150 people turned out on a cool fall day in Gleichen to pay their respects and give thanks for the sacrifice and service of our Armed Forces, fallen veterans and presently serving.
A number of RCMP members in full colour guard came to be part of the assembly. County Councillor Alice Booth, Chief Fred Rabbit Carrier of Siksika Nation and Kevin Sorensen, MP all spoke on behalf of the governmental bodies which they serve. All of them mentioned a sense of unity in moving together for a strong, free Canada.
Even though Gleichen’s Legion #13 disbanded a number of years ago, it was evident that Remembrance Day will be a day of peace and a day of respect through the service that was presented in the community that day.
Sorensen gave respects from MLA Arno Doerksen, who was unable to be present. “Every other day of the year we experience freedom, peace and democracy in Canada because of the lasting legacies left behind from our distinguished servicemen. We look forward, but commemorate the past.,” said Sorenson, reading a message from Doerksen.
Over 158 Canadians have given their lives in the ultimate sacrifice of peace for others through their service to Afghanistan.
“This day we pay tribute to them as this year marks the end of Canada’s role in Afghanistan.” said Booth.
After the program there was a solemn walk to the local cenotaph where the traditional wreathes were laid in honour of those who serve and have served.
