Only a few more days and Family Day will be here and with it marks the first of Strathmore’s centennial celebrations. The festivities will begin at 11 a.m. with a welcome by the mayor. There will be a skating, fire pits with seating, a Town of Strathmore tent, with historical information and centennial pins for sale and much more.
“I am getting kind of excited. Mostly everything is set,” said Councillor Bob Sobol, who also sits on the centennial day committee.
He said there are a few details being ironed out, but said the venue is the key and said Chief Furzer and the Fire Departments have done wonders keeping the ice looking good at Kinsmen Park. The fire departments have also been seen around the park with ladders over the past week, stringing lights up. Sobol said everyone has been great and cooperative.
“The Kinsmen recently offered to supply free hot dogs between noon and 2 p.m.,” said Sobol.
The Kinsmen are also using the celebrations as a bit of a fundraiser for the Food Bank and Sobol said anyone, especially those taking advantage of their free hot dog offer is encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item. There will be baskets available on site. The Kinsmen are also supplying the wood for the firepits.
“An outside event like this always depends on weather, to some extent…so it’s fingers crossed and hoping for the best. So far, it looks fairly decent,” said Sobol.
The Strathmore and District Chamber of Commerce will have a free hot chocolate and coffee booth set up. There will be music all day long and heated tents for those who need a few minutes to warm up. From noon until 3 p.m. there will be free sleigh rides and boy scouts games, including snowshoe races. The first of the centennial celebrations will end with a bang when the fireworks begin at 6:30 p.m.
