Westmount Elementary School was the only elementary school in Strathmore in the early 1970’s. Many people have passed through its doors over the years, some returning when they have children of their own, pointing out former classrooms and teachers they may remember. On Sept. 30 the school will be celebrating 40 years.
“The afternoon of the 30th we’re having a kind of open house event during the school day. We’re going to have a big assembly and just some fun things to commemorate that,” said Principal Wayne Funk.
Students, parents and all former staff members will be invited to the open house to be a part of the celebrations.
Pat Irish, who works in the front office, has been with the school from the beginning, joining the team officially two months after the school opened its doors.
The students were hard at work during the first week of school, preparing their individual clay bricks that will be part of a big mural.
“Everybody got kind of assigned to one of the school’s virtues and that’s what they made their brick (signify) and that’s what the mural is going to be about,” said Funk.
The virtues are: respect, truth, wisdom, love and friendship, courage, humility, and honesty, all of which will be displayed on the mural. The mural will be on display near the entrance for everyone to enjoy when they come to the school.
